Several weeks ago, Perez Hilton announced the audition song for his next “Can You Sing” Cover competition, so I thought I’d give it a try. It was Jason Mraz’s beautifully touching new song “I won’t Give Up.” So after learning the piece on piano and finding a way to make it my own, I recorded it one day in my parent’s living room. Unfortunately, I wasn’t happy with the first several takes, so I re-recorded more takes the next day. BUT once again, I was not thrilled with my performance, so after recruiting my Dad and his girlfriend to watch it and give their critique, we decided to re-record it AGAIN the next day.
So, with mics plugged in, my dad wrapped in chords, headphones and a camera, we finally recorded a version that I felt good about. I’m a huge perfectionist so of course I’m never 100% satisfied with my work, but I’m honored to be getting some great responses to the video. Unfortunately, Perez did not select the video as a winner or runner-up, but I’m happy I pushed myself to perform this song as best as I could because digging deeper into your passions can only lead you into more creative and fulfilling territory.
If you have seen and enjoyed the video, I have an audio version that I have made available as a free download here:
